About

Through primarily painting, printmaking, and sculpture, Kang explores themes of Korean family traditions from childhood, Asian history and femininity in Western culture, techno-orientalism, and the body. A significant part of her process involves critically examining and contemplating ways to subvert the stereotypes and tropes involved in the portrayals of Asian people, specifically Asian women in media, as well as finding ways to celebrate or reconnect with Korean culture. Often incorporating a sculptural aspect or emphasis on materiality in her painting and printmaking practice reinforces her effort to evoke an engaged response from the viewer by occupying a physicality within the space. A majority of Kang's work is reflective of her exploration of her own cultural identity, informed by her experiences of constantly being perceived as “other,” yet also feeling disconnected from her heritage due to being born and raised in Los Angeles within an Americanized family.
